| I mix all my colours from this list
by mixing the colours in acetone, allowing it to evaporate and passing
the residue through a fine tea strainer. Store them in 7 ml glass
jars with snap on lids. Pigments vary considerably in density so I
have packed them in 15ml jars which are filled and then settle, so
weight and volume vary from colour to colour. More expensive pigments
are sold in part jars and minimum weights are indicated. |

WATER-BASED ACRYLIC GLAZES AND PAINTS |
A very brief and rough guide to the use
of Golden acrylics for ceramic conservation and restoration as used
at Addington Studio.
Paints are made of colour such as pigment and carrier such as oil.
The carrier sticks the colour onto the surface. As a general rule
I mix some ceramic porcelain restoration glaze matt with the paint
to ensure that the colour sticks to the surface. If I need to achieve
a special effect I might occasionally use pure acrylic paint but I
ensure that it is on a layer of glaze and preferably sandwiched between
two layers. I do not work in the gloss because the finished coating
is slightly weaker than the matt and more prone to go tacky. I try
to keep the number of coats of gloss glaze to the minimum to achieve
the sheen required. |

BRUSHES |
| I have decided not to sell airbrushes
because of the maintenance. I have yet to find a single airbrush that
can deal with all my airbrushing requirements. In order to keep Addington
Studio fully functional I run 4 airbrushes two of each of the type
that I use. I use the Simair 2000C and the De Vilbiss. I prefer not
to mix the airbrush that I use for solvents with those that I use
for acrylics as the tiny amount of acrylic residue combines with the
solvents causing a slight blockage which interferes with the paint
flow and is time consuming to rectify. I have recently purchased a
second compressor that has 4 airlines so that I can give classes in
airbrushing if any body wishes to attend. |

I use transparent extender to
thin the glaze and paints. Transparent extender is the clear of
the airbrush colour range. Its use results in a tougher film and
slows the build up of gunk in the airbrush nozzle. I stick the object
under a heat lamp not more than 50ºC as I build up layers,
to ensure that the underlying layers of coating are dry as well
as the surface. This prevents water becoming trapped under a dry
surface. Many layers of gloss thinned with water will produce a
tacky surface.

| 712. GOLDEN
PAINTS |
There are three broad types of Golden
Paints stocked at Addington Supplies in well over 100 colours. There
are three different carriers hence the 3 different ranges. They are
known as the airbrush range, the fluid range and the heavy body range.
The colours are the same in all three ranges, for example Hansa yellow
medium, [basic yellow] is available in airbrush, fluid and heavy body
paints. Not all colours are available in all 3 types because some
pigments are not easily added to the thinner carrier. So it follows
that the heavy body range has 105 colours the fluid range has 58 colours
and 24 in the airbrush range. They are all mix and match so I might
add a touch of fluid to a mix made for my airbrush and I regularly
thin the fluid colour mixes with my airbrush colours.
As Conservators, we often require individual products for a particular
job. I am happy to order anything from the Golden range that I do
not have in stock. |
